Introduction to Open Educational Resources (OER)

OER are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation, and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.

OER Commons

OER Commons is a public digital library of open educational resources and a collaboration platform with knowledge management and educational innovation. It provides textbooks among other material types and is an OER repository.

OERTX Repository is a public digital library of open educational resources for higher education.

Rice’s OpenStax Free Textbook Initiative

OpenStax is a nonprofit educational technology initiative based at Rice University. It publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed, openly licensed college textbooks that are absolutely free online and low cost in print.

EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations now includes the content from American Doctoral Dissertations. It is a free database with records for more than 1.2 million electronic theses and dissertations from around the world. (You can also access this database from NAU’s EBSCO resources)

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an American non-profit educational organization. It offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empowers learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. Sign up is free.

MERLOT - Multimedia Education Resource for Learning and Online Teaching

The MERLOT system provides access to curated online learning and support materials and content creation tools, led by an international community of educators, learners, and researchers.

BC campus OpenEd - Open Education initiative in Canada

BC Campus Open Education is a leading open education initiative in Canada, which is an open community to facilitate and enable the initiative of OER. It provides an extensive collection of open textbooks and educational resources.
